In order to guide the students of IILM College towards selecting their subjects, and making them aware of various career options in the fields of Finance, Marketing and Human Resource, a Panel Discussion on Career Options was organized on the 22nd of January. The panel consisted of eminent people from the corporate and academic world. They were: |

2. Mr. Prabh Vir – Business Manager, Surewaves
3. Mr. Chanpreet Singh – Business Analyst, India Times
4. Dr. Padmakali Mishra – Dean, Executive Programme, IILM Institute of Higher Education

Each panelist made a presentation on options available in various functional fields. Mr Akhil Kishore, Director School of Economics and Financial Studies talked of the explosive growth of the financial sector in India. He explained how today finance is the spearhead of the globalization process and enjoys unprecedented visibility and prestige. Highlighting his point he presented some facts and figures:
- The domestic retail banking market is expected to double its annual revenues by 2010
- Overall banking industry growing at the rate of 20%
- New Private Sector banks are growing at the rate of 40%. ICICI Bank alone requires 40,000 people by 2010.
- Employment in the Indian insurance off shoring sector is likely to increase from 41,600 to 100,500 in 2010.
- Financial KPOs to hire approximately 10,000 to 20,000 people in the next 3-4 years

Giving an overview of job profiles in the financial markets Mr Kishore discussed sectors like banks, I-banks, insurance, companies, regulators, credit rating, agencies, brokerage, houses, retail, borrowers, wholesale, borrowers, etc. |

Discussing industry needs and the skill set required from the students to compete/perform in this industry Mr Kishore spoke of specialized
skill-sets (WM, RM, CMR…), Job ready professionals, reduced cost of
training, high end quantitative skills, and so on.

Mr. Chanpreet Singh, Business Analyst, India Times, discussed the meaning of marketing. Is it using on a product/service to fulfill wants, or does it also include advertising, distribution and selling. He also highlighted the difference between sales and marketing, and went on to explain ‘Inbound’ Marketing
(which Includes Market Research) and ‘Outbound’ Marketing.
Mr. Prabh Vir, Business Manager, Surewaves talked about opportunities in Marketing. He explored the various subjects that management schools offered in marketing. Some of them were Marketing Management, Marketing Planning & Strategy, Sales & Distribution Management, Marketing of Services, Advertising & Sales Promotion, Consumer Behavior, Strategic Brand Management, Retail Marketing & Retail Selling Skills, Rural Marketing, Technology In Marketing, Business Marketing and so on. He went on to highlight the importance of choosing the subjects carefully. |

These subjects translate to actual job opportunities like Advertising, Direct Marketing, Brand Management, Public Relations, Sales & Sales Management, Marketing Models & Systems Analysis, Distribution Channel Management, International Marketing, Marketing Research, New Product Planning, Retail Management, E-Commerce, Business-to-Business Marketing, Services Marketing. The need of the hour is, according to Mr Prabh Vir, 360 degree. Talent which can manage multiple marketing front’s i.e. Brand Management, Offline + Online Marketing, Below the Line Activities, etc. The approach today is to be “holistically” prepared than just be a “specialist” in marketing, Get Your fundamentals right on subjects you study, and Keep your self open to jobs beyond the conventional – the only thing that would be constant in your marketing life would be – ‘change’ |

The students were given a brief orientation of all the subjects that have been offered to them this semester, by the respective faculty member. This has helped the second and third year students decide on their elective subjects |

In the session Dr. Padmakali Mishra – Dean, Executive Programme, IILM Institute of Higher Education, discussed the view that students pursuing their respective courses should not identify their subjects at level of graduation. They need to keep the options broad and can specialise later . She also laid stress on the need to have specific goals and targets and a clearly laid out path for growth.
Another important point of discussion was HRIS or Human Resource Information System which is a new contemporary concept, where HR is aligning itself with IT.
On her views about HR being a gender biased profession or stream, she
said that is really did not matter which gender you belong to as it is a necessary skill and everybody needs to develop it .

| The Panel was moderated by Mr Ankur Rohatgi. This was followed by an open house discussion where they answered students’ queries. The students interacted with the guests well after the session also. |
